Antonelli on the Verge of Formula 1 History
Mercedes rising star Kimi Antonelli heads into the 2026 United States Grand Prix with his first opportunity to secure the Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship, potentially becoming the youngest World Champion in the sport's history.
The 20-year-old Italian arrives at Circuit of The Americas in Austin with a commanding 102-point lead over teammate George Russell, following an outstanding season that has produced eight Grand Prix victories and 14 podium finishes across 17 rounds.
Speaking ahead of the race on Thursday, 22 October, Antonelli acknowledged that securing the championship this weekend would require an exceptional performance and favourable results elsewhere.
"For me, it needs to be a perfect weekend," Antonelli explained, while recognising that his closest rivals would also need to struggle.
Despite the possibility of making history, the Mercedes driver remains focused on maintaining his usual approach rather than becoming distracted by championship calculations.
Eight victories. A 102-point championship lead. One opportunity to make history.
What Antonelli Needs to Win the F1 Championship in Austin
With six Grands Prix remaining in the 2026 season, Antonelli has his first mathematical opportunity to secure the title.
However, simply winning Sunday's United States Grand Prix will not be enough.
To become World Champion in Austin, the following results must occur:
- Kimi Antonelli must win the United States Grand Prix.
- George Russell must finish ninth or lower.
- Lewis Hamilton must finish fifth or lower.
If all three conditions are met, Antonelli will secure the championship with five rounds remaining.
A victory would increase his season total to nine wins, ensuring he would also hold the necessary advantage on countback if a rival eventually matched his points total.
If the required results do not materialise, the championship battle will continue to the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November.

Antonelli currently holds a 111-point advantage over Hamilton and a 119-point lead over Verstappen.
With 150 points available across the remaining six races, the championship remains mathematically open, although Antonelli is firmly in control.
Youngest-Ever F1 World Champion Within Reach
Should Antonelli secure the title, he would break one of Formula 1's most significant records.
The current youngest World Champion is Sebastian Vettel, who claimed his first title with Red Bull Racing in 2010 at 23 years old.
Antonelli, currently 20, would break that record by more than three years.
He would also become the first Italian Formula 1 World Champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a 73-year wait for Italy.
His potential achievement is particularly remarkable considering that 2026 is only his second season in Formula 1.
Antonelli joined Mercedes in 2025, replacing seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton following the Briton's move to Ferrari.
Now, just two seasons later, he is approaching the possibility of following Hamilton as a Mercedes World Champion.
Hamilton Praises Antonelli as Verstappen Remains a Threat
Lewis Hamilton has praised Antonelli's talent, maturity and ability to handle the pressure of competing at the highest level.
When asked whether he had any advice for the young Italian, Hamilton jokingly responded, "Slow down!"
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen enters Austin following consecutive Grand Prix victories in Malaysia and Singapore, making Red Bull one of Mercedes' biggest threats for the race win.
Verstappen's recent resurgence could complicate Antonelli's championship ambitions, particularly because the Italian must win the race to secure the title this weekend.
Mercedes and McLaren are also preparing upgrades as Formula 1 begins its upcoming sequence of races in the United States, Mexico and Brazil.
A Defining Weekend for Mercedes and Antonelli
For Winbox Racing, Antonelli's rise represents an impressive example of young motorsport talent progressing from karting and junior single-seater championships to the highest level of racing.
His combination of speed, consistency and mental discipline has placed him within reach of an extraordinary achievement.
However, the young Mercedes driver understands that the championship is not yet decided.
Rather than focusing entirely on the mathematics, Antonelli intends to approach Austin with the same mindset that has delivered success throughout 2026.
One race at a time. One victory at a time. One step closer to the World Championship.
