How Did Rahul Raj Mayer Begin His Racing Career?

Rahul's motorsport journey began in 2007 when he took up karting at the age of 11.

What started on the karting circuit soon developed into competitive racing across Malaysia and beyond. He participated in several junior and senior karting championships, steadily building his skills against experienced young drivers.

Among his early achievements were:

These early experiences provided the foundation for his transition into international single-seater racing.

From Karting to International Formula Racing

Formula Gulf 1000: A Breakthrough in 2012

Rahul stepped into single-seater racing in 2012 through the Formula Gulf 1000 Championship in the Middle East.

It became one of the standout seasons of his early career.

Competing against other aspiring formula drivers, he secured two race victories, ten podium finishes, one pole position and three fastest laps, finishing runner-up in the championship.

The result marked an important step forward, showing that his karting experience could translate into competitive performances in formula racing.

BRDC Formula 4: Racing in the United Kingdom (2013–2014)

Following his Formula Gulf campaign, Rahul moved to the United Kingdom to compete in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship with Hillspeed Racing.

He spent two seasons in the championship, gaining experience on British circuits against an international field of young drivers.

Although he did not secure a championship podium during those seasons, the experience helped him develop his racecraft in a highly competitive single-seater environment.

Formula Renault 2.0 NEC and GP3 Testing (2015)

In 2015, Rahul continued his European racing career in the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup with Mark Burdett Motorsport.

The championship took him to circuits including Silverstone, Monza and the Red Bull Ring, giving him further experience with different tracks and racing conditions.

Later that year, Rahul participated in an official GP3 Series post-season test with Campos Racing in Abu Dhabi.

While the test did not lead to a GP3 championship race entry, it was another significant experience in his international motorsport journey.

Why Did Rahul Raj Mayer Take a Break From Racing?

After his 2015 Formula Renault season, Rahul stepped away from pursuing a full-time international racing career.

Like many young drivers, progressing through motorsport required substantial financial backing. Funding limitations played a part in his decision to pause his racing ambitions.

During his time away from full-season competition, Rahul focused on education and business, including building two ventures outside motorsport.

However, his racing career was not over.

After returning to endurance competition at the Sepang 1000KM in 2022, Rahul made a more substantial comeback in 2023 through the Toyota GAZOO Racing Vios Challenge.

Returning to Malaysian Motorsport With Toyota GAZOO Racing

Toyota GR Vios Challenge 2023

After roughly eight years away from full-season competition, Rahul returned to the starting grid in February 2023.

He joined the Toyota GAZOO Racing Vios Challenge Season 6, competing in the Super Sporting Class, the category featuring experienced professional racing drivers.

His return also marked a change in racing disciplines.

Having spent much of his earlier career in open-wheel formula cars, Rahul was now competing in production-based touring cars, where close racing and direct battles for position are common.

He finished ninth and eighth in his first two races at Sepang, eventually placing 12th in the season standings.

The comeback allowed Rahul to reconnect with competitive motorsport while adapting his experience to a different type of racing.

Malaysian Touring Car Racing

Rahul's return also opened opportunities in Malaysian touring-car and endurance competitions.

He gained experience with local racing teams, including HiRev Dream Chaser, competing in events that placed greater emphasis on car reliability, teamwork and maintaining consistent performance over longer distances.

These experiences would lead to some of the most significant achievements of his racing career.

Back-to-Back Sepang 1000KM Victories (2024–2025)

2024: Winning the Sepang 1000KM Overall

One of Rahul's biggest career milestones came in November 2024 when he helped HiRev Dream Chaser secure an overall victory at the Sepang 1000KM.

Sharing a Suzuki Swift Sport with Hayden Haikal and Daim Hishammudin, Rahul competed against a field that included manufacturer-backed teams.

Despite the challenges of endurance racing, the trio completed 181 laps at Sepang International Circuit, finishing in approximately eight hours and 14 minutes.

The result delivered a memorable victory for HiRev Dream Chaser and became one of Rahul's most notable achievements since returning to racing.

2025: Another Victory at Sepang

Rahul followed up his 2024 success with another winning performance in the 2025 Sepang 1000KM.

This time, he raced in the HiRev Dream Chaser Honda City Hatchback #1 alongside Daim Hishammudin and Aaron Hakim Mohamad Haikal.

The team completed 181 laps and secured victory in the M-Production class.

For Rahul, winning in consecutive editions of the Sepang 1000KM demonstrated his ability to contribute in endurance racing across different cars and driver lineups.

Joining Winbox Racing for the GR86 Cup Malaysia 2026

In 2026, Rahul began another chapter of his motorsport career by joining Winbox Racing's GR86 Cup Malaysia programme.

He shares the team's #50 Toyota GR86, nicknamed "Rexy", with fellow Malaysian driver Adele Lew.

Unlike his earlier international single-seater campaigns or the longer-distance Sepang 1000KM, the GR86 Cup places him in closely matched machinery, where small differences in lap times and race execution can shape the final result.

His experience across karting, formula racing, touring cars and endurance events brings a broad racing background to Winbox Racing's GR86 Cup campaign.

Rahul's 2026 GR86 Cup Performance

During the opening GR86 Cup Malaysia race weekend at Sepang on 24–26 July 2026, the Winbox Racing #50 entry achieved first place in Class O and second overall in Race 2.

Rahul was also credited with a fastest lap of 2:35.737 during the event.

The performance marked an encouraging milestone for Winbox Racing's debut GR86 Cup season.
