Kimi Antonelli Becomes Youngest-Ever F1 World Champion in Mexico
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has officially become the youngest Formula 1 World Champion in history after finishing third at the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix.
At just 20 years and 68 days old, the Italian broke Sebastian Vettel's longstanding record, securing his maiden world championship with four races remaining.
Antonelli also became the first Italian F1 World Champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a remarkable 73-year wait.
Antonelli Secures Historic Championship in Mexico
Entering the Mexico City Grand Prix, Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish to guarantee the championship.
Starting fourth at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, the Mercedes youngster faced a challenging 71-lap race featuring multiple incidents, a red flag and a late Safety Car.
Despite the chaos, Antonelli maintained his composure and moved into third place after overtaking Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
He eventually crossed the finish line behind race winner Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.
The result confirmed Antonelli's first Drivers' Championship, completing a remarkable second season in Formula 1.

Antonelli broke Vettel's record by more than three years, establishing a new benchmark for future generations.
Verstappen Wins Mexico City Grand Prix
While Antonelli celebrated his championship, Max Verstappen claimed victory for Red Bull Racing.
The Dutchman capitalised on an intense opening-lap battle between Ferrari teammates Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Verstappen eventually secured his third Grand Prix victory of the season, finishing just 0.799 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

Despite finishing third, Antonelli was undoubtedly one of the biggest winners of the weekend.
Mercedes' Rising Star Reaches the Top
Antonelli joined Mercedes in 2025 as Lewis Hamilton's replacement.
Just two seasons later, the Italian has delivered the Drivers' Championship to the German manufacturer.
His 2026 campaign has featured nine Grand Prix victories, demonstrating impressive consistency, speed and maturity.
Following the race, Antonelli thanked Mercedes and his family for supporting his journey to the championship.
The emotional celebrations highlighted the significance of the achievement for both driver and team.
A New Era for Formula 1
With the Drivers' Championship decided, attention now turns to the remaining four races and the Constructors' Championship.
Formula 1 heads to Brazil for the São Paulo Grand Prix on 6–8 November.
For Antonelli, however, the pressure of the title battle is over.
At just 20 years old, Kimi Antonelli has already achieved Formula 1's ultimate prize — and his career is only beginning.
