Acosta Triumphs in Dramatic Malaysian MotoGP Sprint
Pedro Acosta claimed a thrilling victory in the 2026 Malaysian MotoGP Sprint at Sepang International Circuit on Saturday, 31 October, overcoming unpredictable weather and fierce competition to secure his second Sprint victory of the season.
The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider crossed the finish line 0.578 seconds ahead of championship leader Marc Márquez, while Aprilia Racing's Marco Bezzecchi completed the podium.
The 10-lap Sprint was filled with drama as rain threatened the circuit, pole-sitter Álex Márquez crashed out of the lead, and several riders gambled on switching to wet-weather motorcycles.
Meanwhile, Jorge Martin's withdrawal due to a fractured wrist delivered another major setback to his championship challenge.
With the results confirmed, Marc Márquez now holds a 19-point championship advantage heading into Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix.
Álex Márquez Claims Pole Before Sprint Heartbreak
Earlier on Saturday, Álex Márquez delivered an impressive qualifying performance for Gresini Racing MotoGP.
The Spaniard secured pole position with a blistering 1:56.493, beating older brother Marc Márquez by just 0.070 seconds.
Pedro Acosta completed the front row, only 0.084 seconds behind the pole-sitter.
Ai Ogura qualified fourth, followed by Marco Bezzecchi and Fabio Di Giannantonio.
However, Álex's promising weekend took a dramatic turn during the Sprint.
After making a strong start and establishing himself at the front, the Gresini Ducati rider crashed at Turn 14 while leading.
The incident ended his hopes of converting pole position into victory and opened the door for his rivals.
Acosta Beats Márquez After Late Battle
Following Álex Márquez's retirement, Trackhouse Aprilia rider Ai Ogura inherited the lead.
The Japanese rider delivered an impressive performance and appeared capable of challenging for his first MotoGP Sprint victory.
However, Acosta gradually closed the gap as the race entered its final stages.
With three laps remaining, the KTM rider overtook Ogura and moved into first place.
Marc Márquez also passed Ogura shortly afterwards, moving into second.
Bezzecchi subsequently overtook the Trackhouse rider to secure third.
Despite increasing pressure from Márquez, Acosta maintained his advantage and crossed the finish line first.
The victory underlined KTM's improving competitiveness and Acosta's ability to perform under challenging conditions.

Rain Creates Chaos at Sepang
Changing weather conditions added another layer of uncertainty to the Sprint.
Light rain began falling during the early laps, prompting officials to display the white flag, allowing riders to change motorcycles.
Jack Miller was among the first to gamble on a switch to wet tyres.
However, the Australian's spare Pramac Yamaha was not ready when he entered the pits, disrupting his race.
Several other riders, including Joan Mir, Franco Morbidelli and Iker Lecuona, also changed motorcycles.
The decision proved costly because the track did not become sufficiently wet during the race to make the switch worthwhile.
Most leading riders remained on slick tyres and continued racing.
Heavier rain arrived shortly after the chequered flag, meaning those who stayed out benefited from their decision.
Jorge Martin Withdraws as Wrist Injury Ends Sepang Weekend
One of Saturday's biggest developments occurred before qualifying.
Aprilia Racing confirmed that Jorge Martin would withdraw from the remainder of the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend because of his fractured right wrist.
Martin sustained the injury during the Australian MotoGP Sprint at Phillip Island on 24 October.
Despite receiving medical clearance to attempt the Malaysian weekend, the 2024 World Champion continued experiencing pain and difficulty controlling his motorcycle under braking.
He completed Friday's opening practice and attempted further running on Saturday morning.
However, the physical demands proved too great.
After consulting his team and medical personnel, Martin decided to withdraw and concentrate on recovery.
The decision means he will score no championship points in Malaysia.
With only three rounds remaining after Sepang, his title challenge has become significantly more difficult.
Marc Márquez Extends Championship Lead to 19 Points
Martin's withdrawal gave Marc Márquez an opportunity to strengthen his position in the championship.
The Ducati Lenovo rider entered the Malaysian weekend holding a 10-point advantage over Martin.
By finishing second in the Sprint, Márquez collected nine championship points.
His total increased to 374 points, extending his lead over Martin to 19.
Bezzecchi remains third with 322 points, while Acosta's Sprint victory lifts him to 275.

Márquez will have another opportunity to increase his advantage during Sunday's full-distance Grand Prix.
However, Bezzecchi also remains mathematically involved in the championship fight.
The Italian trails Márquez by 52 points and will be hoping to reduce that deficit before the final three rounds.
Joan Mir Continues MotoGP Comeback
Saturday also marked another important step in Joan Mir's return to MotoGP.
The Honda HRC Castrol rider is competing at Sepang after a 44-day absence caused by health problems.
Mir qualified 11th for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
During the Sprint, he was among the riders who gambled on switching motorcycles as rain threatened the circuit.
The decision cost him considerable time, and he eventually finished 16th.
Although the result was disappointing, completing the Sprint represented another milestone in his comeback.
Mir will now focus on Sunday's longer race as he continues rebuilding his fitness and confidence.
Malaysian MotoGP 2026 — Sunday Race Preview
Attention now turns to the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday, 1 November 2026.
Álex Márquez will start from pole position despite his Sprint crash, with Marc Márquez and Pedro Acosta alongside him on the front row.
Acosta will be aiming to convert his Sprint-winning pace into another strong result.
Marc Márquez, meanwhile, has the opportunity to extend his championship lead further.
With Martin absent, the Ducati rider enters Sunday's race in a favourable position.
However, Sepang's demanding conditions, tyre management and unpredictable weather could still produce surprises.
