David Alonso Confirmed for MotoGP With Honda in 2027
Honda Racing Corporation has confirmed that David Alonso will step up to MotoGP in 2027, securing one of the sport’s most highly rated young riders on a multi-year agreement.
The announcement was made on 21 July 2026, with Honda confirming Alonso will join its MotoGP programme from next season. However, HRC has not yet revealed whether Alonso will race for the factory Honda HRC squad or with LCR Honda.
The move gives the Colombian rider his first opportunity in the premier class and places him at the heart of Honda’s preparations for MotoGP’s new technical era.
From Moto3 Champion to MotoGP Rider
Alonso’s rise through the Grand Prix paddock has been remarkably quick.
After finishing third in the Moto3 World Championship as a rookie in 2023, he dominated the category in 2024 to claim the Moto3 world title. He then progressed to Moto2, where he continued developing into one of the strongest prospects in the championship.
His first Moto2 victory arrived at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, and by the time Honda announced his MotoGP deal in July 2026, Alonso was running fourth in the Moto2 championship standings.
Across Moto3 and Moto2, Alonso had accumulated 20 victories, 30 podiums and nine pole positions, underlining why Honda moved early to secure him.
Honda Invests in One of MotoGP’s Brightest Young Talents
Signing Alonso represents an important long-term move for Honda.
At just 20 years old when the agreement was announced, he offers HRC a rider who can potentially grow alongside the manufacturer's next-generation MotoGP project.
Honda announced Alonso's signing on the same day it confirmed Fabio Quartararo for the factory Honda HRC team from 2027. Quartararo is locked in with the factory squad for 2027 and 2028, while Alonso’s exact team placement remains to be announced.
That creates an interesting balance in Honda's future programme: proven MotoGP championship experience alongside one of the strongest emerging talents from the junior categories.
Alonso Arrives as MotoGP Enters the 850cc Era
The timing of Alonso's promotion is especially significant because MotoGP introduces its new 850cc technical regulations in 2027.
Rather than entering the premier class midway through an established technical cycle, Alonso will arrive as every manufacturer adapts to a new generation of machinery.
That could give younger riders an unusual opportunity. With new bikes, revised technical rules and new performance characteristics, established MotoGP experience may not carry quite the same advantage as it would during a mature regulations cycle.
