Sepang F1 Delivers Nearly RM950 Million Economic Boost
Formula 1's return to Malaysia generated an estimated RM950 million in economic impact, according to figures presented by the Youth and Sports Ministry in Parliament.
The Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, held at Sepang International Circuit from October 2–4, 2026, marked Formula 1's return to Malaysia after a nine-year absence.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari revealed the figures in a written parliamentary reply, citing information provided by Formula 1 Management (FOM).
The event attracted approximately 261,000 spectator attendances across three days, including an estimated 103,000 on Sunday's race day.
The strong turnout demonstrates the continued popularity of Formula 1 in Malaysia and the potential economic value of hosting international motorsport events.
Nine years away. Three days of racing. Nearly RM950 million in economic impact.
International Tourism Drives Economic Benefits
The event attracted substantial international attention, bringing visitors and motorsport personnel to Malaysia.
According to the ministry, the race generated the following figures:

he influx of international visitors supported businesses across Malaysia's tourism, hospitality, aviation, transportation and retail sectors.
Hotels, restaurants and local small and medium-sized enterprises also benefited from the additional spending associated with the race weekend.
The ministry highlighted Formula 1's role in strengthening Malaysia's international profile as a destination for major sporting events and investment.
Bahrain Covers Hosting Rights as Malaysia Benefits
One important factor behind the 2026 event's economic outcome was its unusual hosting arrangement.
Unlike previous Malaysian Grands Prix, Bahrain covered the Formula 1 hosting rights fees through its collaboration with Sepang International Circuit.
The arrangement allowed Malaysia to host the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix without directly bearing those particular fees.
However, the estimated RM950 million represents economic activity rather than confirmed government profit.
The ministry has not disclosed the government's total expenditure on the event, meaning the final financial return has yet to be established.
Strong economic impact does not automatically mean a profitable event.
That distinction will be crucial when evaluating Malaysia's Formula 1 future.
Government Evaluates Permanent Formula 1 Return
Following the event's success, the Malaysian government is examining whether Sepang should return to the Formula 1 calendar on a regular basis.
Sepang International Circuit and an appointed consultancy firm are conducting a cost-benefit assessment to compare the economic benefits with the expenses involved in organising the race.
The findings will help the government determine whether a long-term Formula 1 agreement would be financially sustainable.
The latest economic figures add a new dimension to discussions about Malaysia's potential permanent return.
However, a regular Malaysian Grand Prix would involve different financial commitments from the special 2026 arrangement, including future hosting rights and operational costs.
No permanent Formula 1 agreement has been confirmed.
Sepang's Success Highlights Malaysia's Motorsport Potential
For Winbox Racing, the economic impact of Formula 1's return highlights the wider importance of motorsport to Malaysia.
Beyond the racing itself, international events create opportunities for local businesses, tourism operators, automotive companies and motorsport organisations.
Sepang International Circuit remains one of Southeast Asia's most important motorsport venues, regularly hosting international and domestic racing championships.
The government's ongoing assessment will now determine whether the excitement surrounding Formula 1's return can translate into a sustainable long-term investment.
261,000 spectator attendances. More than 50,000 international tourists. Nearly RM950 million in economic impact.
Sepang has demonstrated Formula 1's economic potential. The next challenge is making a permanent return financially sustainable.
