Antonelli Sent to the Back at Monza
Kimi Antonelli faces a massive home-race challenge at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix.
Mercedes has confirmed a complete power-unit change for the championship leader at Monza. Because Antonelli has exceeded his permitted season allocation, the changes will trigger penalties that send him to the back of the grid.
The timing could hardly be more dramatic: Antonelli arrives at his home Grand Prix leading the Formula 1 World Championship.
Why Mercedes Chose Monza
The penalty is strategic.
Mercedes has faced reliability concerns during 2026, including the technical problem that forced Antonelli out in Barcelona. Team principal Toto Wolff said the team's calculations identified Monza as the best circuit to absorb the penalty rather than risking further problems later in the championship.
Monza's long straights and overtaking opportunities also give Antonelli a realistic chance to fight his way back through the field.
Championship Leader Under Pressure
Antonelli heads into Monza with a 59-point championship advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell, making damage limitation the priority.
The Italian has won six Grands Prix this season, while Mercedes also leads the Constructors' Championship.
But starting at the back opens the door for Russell, Ferrari and McLaren to attack.

For Antonelli, this won't be a normal Italian Grand Prix.
He's the championship leader. He's racing in front of his home crowd. And he's starting from the back.
