Verstappen Charges From P24 to P9 in GT3 Debut
Max Verstappen delivered an impressive comeback drive during his GT World Challenge Europe debut at Portimão on October 17, recovering from 24th to ninth place during the final stint of the three-hour endurance race.
With Formula 1 taking a weekend break, the four-time World Champion swapped his Red Bull F1 car for the #3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO entered by Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing.
Sharing driving duties with Chris Lulham and Ben Barnicoat, Verstappen's team qualified 15th before making significant progress during the opening stages.
However, a drive-through penalty following contact involving Lulham dropped the Mercedes down the order.
When Verstappen took over, he immediately began attacking the field, producing a series of overtakes to secure a top-10 finish.
The race was ultimately won by the #17 Mercedes-AMG Team GetSpeed, driven by Maximilian Götz, Ralf Aron and Fabian Schiller.
From P24 to P9. Fifteen positions gained. One remarkable GT3 debut.
Valentino Rossi's Portimão Challenge Ends in Disappointment
The event also featured nine-time motorcycle Grand Prix World Champion Valentino Rossi, competing in the #46 BMW M4 GT3 EVO for Team WRT.
Rossi shared the car with Max Hesse and Neil Verhagen, creating a rare opportunity for Formula 1 and MotoGP legends to compete in the same race.
However, Rossi's weekend became complicated during qualifying when a track-limits infringement resulted in the loss of a lap time.
The BMW started 60th on the 61-car grid, leaving the team facing a difficult recovery.
Despite making progress during the race, the #46 BMW eventually retired with suspension damage and was classified 50th.
The highly anticipated Verstappen-Rossi battle therefore never developed into a direct fight for position.
Nevertheless, their participation attracted significant attention, with organisers reporting 9.7 million YouTube livestream views and approximately 28,000 spectators at Portimão.
GT3 Racing Demonstrates Its Growing Global Appeal
The appearance of two motorsport legends highlighted the growing international appeal of GT3 endurance racing.
Unlike Formula 1 or MotoGP, GT3 competitions feature production-based racing cars from manufacturers including Mercedes-AMG, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren.
Success depends on more than individual driving ability, with driver changes, pit-stop execution, tyre management and traffic playing major roles.
For Verstappen, the Portimão outing provided another opportunity to develop his endurance racing experience.
For Rossi, it represented another chapter in his transition from motorcycle racing to international GT competition.
Two champions. Two racing disciplines. One endurance racing grid.
