Toprak Razgatlioglu's Rookie MotoGP Season Comes to an Early End
Three-time World Superbike Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 MotoGP season following a serious shoulder injury sustained during the Indonesian Grand Prix weekend at Mandalika.
Prima Pramac Yamaha officially confirmed the news on 20 October 2026, announcing that the Turkish rider requires surgery after further medical examinations revealed more extensive damage than initially expected.
The operation is scheduled for Monday, 26 October, in Milan, Italy, effectively ending Razgatlioglu's debut MotoGP campaign with five rounds remaining.
Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez will step in as his replacement, beginning with the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.
Mandalika Crash Leads to Season-Ending Surgery
Razgatlioglu suffered a heavy highside crash at Turn 13 during practice for the Indonesian Grand Prix.
The accident resulted in a dislocated shoulder, although the Turkish rider initially attempted to continue competing.
Despite the injury, he returned for qualifying and completed the Sprint race before retiring from Sunday's Grand Prix after eight laps due to a lack of strength in his shoulder.
Following the race, Razgatlioglu travelled to Milan on 19 October for additional medical examinations.
The results confirmed that surgery would be necessary to ensure a full recovery.
The decision means the Pramac Yamaha rider will miss the remaining five rounds, including the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix.
Razgatlioglu Disappointed to Miss Phillip Island Farewell
The injury is particularly disappointing for Razgatlioglu, who had been looking forward to racing at Phillip Island.
The Australian circuit holds special significance for the Turkish rider following his successful career in World Superbike.
Phillip Island will also host its final MotoGP Grand Prix in 2026 before the Australian event moves to Adelaide in 2027.
Razgatlioglu acknowledged his disappointment but emphasised that recovering fully remains the priority.
The 29-year-old also expressed support for teammate Jack Miller, who will compete in front of his home crowd this weekend.
A difficult ending to his rookie season, but recovery now takes priority over racing.
Augusto Fernandez Replaces Toprak at Pramac Yamaha
With Razgatlioglu sidelined, Augusto Fernandez will take over the Prima Pramac Yamaha seat for the remaining races.
The Spanish rider already has experience with Yamaha's YZR-M1 through his role as an official test rider.
His familiarity with the motorcycle and Yamaha's development programme makes him a suitable replacement as the team approaches the final stages of the season.
Pramac Yamaha team director Gino Borsoi expressed disappointment over Razgatlioglu's absence, while reaffirming the team's commitment to supporting his recovery.
A Challenging First MotoGP Season for the WorldSBK Champion
Razgatlioglu entered MotoGP in 2026 as one of the most highly anticipated newcomers, following a remarkable career in the World Superbike Championship.
The three-time WorldSBK champion faced a demanding transition to MotoGP machinery, adapting his riding style to a different motorcycle, tyres and racing environment.
His best Grand Prix finish of the season came at Balaton Park, where he secured 11th place.
Although his rookie campaign ends earlier than planned, the experience gained throughout 2026 provides a foundation for his future in the premier class.
For Winbox Racing, the news highlights the physical demands and risks involved in professional motorcycle racing, where even experienced champions must balance competition with long-term recovery.
With surgery approaching, Razgatlioglu's immediate focus will be rehabilitation and preparing for a return to racing.
From WorldSBK champion to MotoGP rookie, Toprak Razgatlioglu's journey is far from over.
The 2026 season ends here — but the comeback begins with recovery.
