Márquez Strikes Back at Motegi
Marc Márquez has turned up the pressure in the 2026 MotoGP title fight after winning Saturday's Sprint at Motegi, reducing Jorge Martin's championship advantage to just seven points.
The Ducati rider converted a strong qualifying performance into maximum Sprint points, controlling the race at the front as the title battle tightened once again.
Martin limited the damage but couldn't match Márquez's pace, allowing his championship rival to make another significant gain.
12 points before Motegi. Seven after the Sprint.
The fight is getting closer.
Championship Battle Tightens Again
Martin arrived in Japan with 306 points, holding a 12-point advantage over Márquez following the Austrian Grand Prix.
Márquez's Sprint victory means that gap has now fallen to only seven points heading into Sunday's full-length Japanese Grand Prix.
With significantly more points available in the main race, Motegi could produce another championship swing before MotoGP moves deeper into its Asian run.
Martin remains in control of the standings — but his margin for error is disappearing.
Seven points. One Grand Prix. Everything still open.
Motegi Sets Up Huge Sunday Showdown
The result creates a fascinating situation for Sunday's race.
Motegi's heavy braking zones have traditionally suited Márquez's aggressive riding style, and his Sprint performance suggests Ducati has the pace required to challenge for another victory.
Martin, however, knows a strong Sunday result could immediately restore some breathing room at the top of the standings.
Marco Bezzecchi also remains an important factor in the championship picture, while home favourite Ai Ogura continues to attract major attention during his home Japanese Grand Prix weekend.
The pressure will only increase when the lights go out on Sunday.
Márquez vs Martin Is Becoming MotoGP's Main Event
For Winbox Racing, the Japanese Grand Prix has delivered exactly what the championship needed — another direct fight between its two leading contenders.
Martin has spent much of the season protecting his advantage.
Márquez has spent months chasing him.
Now the gap is almost gone.
With the championship entering its decisive final stretch, every Sprint position, overtaking move and Grand Prix result could determine who leaves 2026 as MotoGP World Champion.
Márquez wins the Sprint. Martin still leads the championship.
But only seven points separate them now.
Sunday at Motegi could change everything.
