Martin Edges Márquez in Austria
Jorge Martin delivered a major statement in the 2026 MotoGP title fight by beating Marc Márquez to pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix.
The Aprilia rider produced a 1:27.917 lap at the Red Bull Ring, beating Márquez by only 0.015 seconds in an incredibly tight qualifying battle. It was Martin's third pole position of the season.
0.015 seconds. That's all that separated MotoGP's two championship leaders.
All-Spanish Front Row
Márquez secured second for Ducati, while Pedro Acosta put KTM third at its home circuit.
Less than a tenth covered the entire front row, setting up a potentially intense battle between Martin, Márquez and Acosta. Marco Bezzecchi qualified fourth, with returning Trackhouse Aprilia rider Ai Ogura taking an impressive fifth.
Title Rivals Started the Weekend Level
The qualifying result carried extra significance because Martin and Márquez entered Austria level on 274 championship points.
Márquez held the official championship lead on countback after his Misano victory, while Martin arrived needing a response following the arm-pump problems that affected his San Marino GP.
Martin's pole gave him the ideal starting position for both Saturday's Sprint and Sunday's Grand Prix.
