Marc Márquez Sets the Pace at Phillip Island
Marc Márquez made a strong start to the 2026 Australian MotoGP weekend, topping Friday's opening free practice session at Phillip Island with a fastest lap of 1:27.985.
The Ducati Lenovo Team rider secured the top position during the closing stages of the 45-minute session on 23 October 2026, narrowly beating Trackhouse Aprilia's Raul Fernandez by just 0.048 seconds.
Australian home favourite Jack Miller completed the top three aboard his Prima Pramac Yamaha, finishing only 0.135 seconds behind Márquez.
The session featured several dramatic incidents, including crashes for Miller and Fernandez, as riders pushed for early pace at the iconic Australian circuit.
Ducati leads, Aprilia challenges, and Yamaha delivers a surprise at Phillip Island.
Márquez Impresses With Fastest Lap on Used Tyres
One of the most impressive aspects of Márquez's performance was his ability to set the fastest lap on heavily used tyres.
While several competitors fitted fresh rubber for their final attempts, Márquez produced his benchmark time on a rear tyre that had already completed numerous laps.
His performance demonstrated strong early race pace and suggested Ducati could be competitive throughout the weekend.
The result is particularly important as Márquez continues his championship battle against Aprilia's Jorge Martin.
Entering the Australian Grand Prix, Martin holds a narrow two-point championship advantage over Márquez.
With the Sprint and Grand Prix still to come, every point could prove crucial in the fight for the 2026 MotoGP World Championship.
Jack Miller Shines Before High-Speed Crash

Jack Miller delivered one of the standout performances of FP1, briefly moving to the top of the timing screens aboard his Pramac Yamaha.
However, moments after setting his fastest lap, the Australian suffered a high-speed crash at Turn 1, also known as Doohan Corner.
Miller slid through the gravel trap but escaped injury and returned to the pit lane.
Despite the incident, his lap time of 1:28.120 remained good enough for third place.
The result provides an encouraging start for Miller as he competes in front of his home crowd during Phillip Island's final MotoGP Grand Prix.
Raul Fernandez Recovers From Crash to Secure P2
Trackhouse Aprilia rider Raul Fernandez also experienced a dramatic session.
The Spaniard crashed at Siberia Corner, raising concerns about the finger injury he sustained during the Indonesian Grand Prix weekend.
Fortunately, Fernandez was able to continue riding and eventually secured second place with a lap time of 1:28.033.
His performance reinforced Aprilia's competitiveness at Phillip Island, where the manufacturer will be looking to challenge Ducati throughout the weekend.
Marco Bezzecchi added another strong result for Aprilia by finishing fourth, while championship leader Jorge Martin placed seventh.

The top 10 featured four different motorcycle manufacturers, highlighting the competitive nature of the opening session.
Meanwhile, Francesco Bagnaia endured a difficult start, finishing 18th and more than 1.6 seconds behind teammate Márquez.
Championship Battle Intensifies Ahead of Australian GP
The Australian Grand Prix represents a critical moment in the 2026 MotoGP championship.
With Jorge Martin and Marc Márquez separated by just two points, Phillip Island could play a decisive role in determining the championship leader heading into the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.
For Winbox Racing, the opening session demonstrates the intense competition between Ducati, Aprilia, Yamaha and KTM as the championship approaches its final stages.
Although Márquez has taken the early advantage, FP1 does not determine the starting grid, and the riders must still complete timed Practice and qualifying.
Márquez strikes first. Fernandez responds. Miller delivers home-ground excitement.
