Norris Was in Control at Madring
Lando Norris looked set to win the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at Madring before a badly timed Virtual Safety Car completely changed the race.
Starting from pole, the McLaren driver built a lead of more than six seconds and appeared on course for his third victory of the season.
Pole position. Race lead. Victory within reach.
Then the VSC arrived.
Virtual Safety Car Changes Everything
The timing allowed Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen to gain valuable time through their pit stops, while Norris missed the optimal window.
When Norris eventually stopped, he rejoined behind both rivals and was forced to settle for third place, with Antonelli taking the historic first Madring victory.
Norris described himself as “insanely unlucky”, while acknowledging there was little McLaren could have done differently.
Antonelli Capitalises on Norris' Misfortune
Antonelli took full advantage to claim his eighth victory of 2026, finishing ahead of Verstappen and Norris.
The result also extended the Mercedes driver's championship advantage to 81 points over George Russell after 14 rounds.
For Winbox Racing, Norris' Spanish GP is another reminder of how quickly Formula 1 can change.
Six-second lead. One VSC. Victory gone.
Norris had the pace — but Antonelli got the opportunity.
